Anthology published: June
2006
First Prize - €10,000
Second Prize - a week at the Anam
Cara Writers' & Artists' Retreat in West Cork's Beara Peninsula,

Third Prize - €250
All winning authors will be invited to read their work at the launch of the book during the West Cork Literary Festival held at Bantry House in July 2006. It is a condition of the competition that the overall winner attends the launch of the Anthology.
The First Prize will otherwise be passed to the next in line. The entire judging process is blind. The Fish Short Story Prize has been running uninterrupted since 1994 and the Prize has been awarded every year at the launch of the Anthology of winning stories.
Judges
Helen
Garnons-Williams, Publishing
Director, Weidenfeld & Nicolson.
Helen began her career in publishing
after a short-lived foray into the
world of Strategy Consultancy -
in which she learned a painful amount
about financial analysis - as an
Editorial Assistant at Hodder &
Staughton, working on fiction, non-fiction
TV tie-ins and audiobooks.
The first book she acquired was
a cookbook, and she was then promoted
to non-fiction editor, before it
became obvious to herself and to
her bosses that she was, in fact,
mostly acquiring novels. She
then became Editorial Director of
Sceptre, Hodder & Staughton's
award-winning literary imprint,
where she acquired and edited authors
such as Jasper Fforde, Mil Millington,
Carolyn Parkhurst, Gregory Norminton
and Tariq Goddard. In June
2003 she moved to Weidenfeld &
Nicholson, where she now runs the
literary fiction list. Her
authors include Michel Houellebecq,
Boris Akunin, Belle de Jour, Gideon
Defoe and Ben Richards.
Gerard
Donovan born in Wexford
and grew up in Galway. His collections
are Columbus Rides Again (The Cliffs
of Moher, Co Clare, Salmon, 1992);
Kings and Bicycles (Salmon, 1995);
and The LightHouse (Salmon, 2000),
which was short listed for the Irish
Times Literature Prize. His novel,
Schopenhauer's Telescope (New York,
Perseus Publishing/ London, Scribner,
2003), was long listed for the Man
Booker Prize, 2003. In 1999 he completed
the 140-mile Marathon des Sables
in North Africa with his two brothers,
later the subject of an award-winning
documentary. After a career playing
classical guitar in the eighties,
he currently works as a professor
in New York.
Karl
Iagnemma was overall winner
of the Fish Short Story Prize 1997
with his story Dog Days. His book
of short stories, On the Nature
of Human Romantic Interaction, was
published in 2003 by the Dial Press.
The book's title story is currently
being developed as a feature film
by Warner Brothers Pictures. Karl's
short stories have received numerous
awards, including the Paris Review
Plimpton Prize, first place in the
Playboy college fiction contest,
and grants from the National Endowment
for the Arts and the Massachusetts
Cultural Council. His writing has
appeared in Tin House, SEED, One
Story, and Zoetrope, and been anthologized
in the Best American Short Stories,
The Best American Erotica, and Pushcart
Prize collections. Karl currently
works as a research scientist in
the mechanical engineering department
at the M.I.T. He's completing a
novel about an ill-fated scientific
expedition to upper Michigan in
the 1840s.
