Welcome to the 14th Fish International Short Story Prize.

The quality of the entries to this competition continues to surprise and delight us. We look forward to reading all your stories this year and to producing another fine anthology in 2008. You can buy the 2007 Anthology direct from us at our ON-LINE BOOK SHOP. OR! ...

Tell us your story ID Number and your postal address and we will get the book off to you as soon as possible. (One book per Author.)

Once again this year we will be spreading the prize-fund more widely, to financially reward all the finalists of the competition. In addition to the top three prizes, we will also be offering an award to all the authors who appear in the Anthology and who attend our book launch to read from their stories.

As usual, this competition is on-line entry only. We apologise to our regular postal entrants for any inconvenience. We will work hard to accommodate you wherever possible.

The Fish Short Story Prize has been running uninterrupted since 1994 and the Prize has been awarded every year at the launch of the Anthology of winning stories. All the winning authors will be invited to read their work at the launch of the book during the West Cork Literary Festival held in Bantry in July 2008.

First Prize - €2,500 - It is a condition of the competition that the overall winner attends the launch of the Anthology. The First Prize will otherwise be passed to the next in line

Second Prize - a week at the Anam Cara Writers' & Artists' Retreat in West Cork's Beara Peninsula, with €300 travelling expenses.

Third Prize - €300

In addition to these prize-winners, all those who are published in the Anthology will receive an award of €100 and five complementary copies of the Fish Anthology 2008. Those who can attend the Award Ceremony and Book Launch in July 2008 will also receive a Fish Certificate to commemorate their visit.

The Rules

  • No entry form is needed. Entry is on-line only.
  • You can make as many different entries as you like.
  • There is no restriction on theme or style.
  • Maximum 5,000 words.
  • The winning stories must be available for the anthology and, therefore, must not have been published previously.
  • Copyright returns to the author one year after publication.
  • Notification of receipt of entry will normally be by email.
  • The judges' verdict is final.
  • No correspondence will be entered into once work has been submitted
  • Stories cannot be altered or changed after they have been entered.
  • The Prize is open to writers of any nationality writing in English.
